It’s time we start taking obesity seriously. Dr. Matthew McAlees shares some shocking statistics on the obesity epidemic in the United States and why it’s more important than ever to begin a lifestyle change.
The Obesity Epidemic
The obesity epidemic is rapidly climbing with over 200 million overweight or obese people in the United States. 60% of the population is either overweight or obese, and by 2030, 80% of Americans will be overweight or obese.
You can see in these slides how the obesity epidemic has taken off since the 1990’s, and it just keeps getting worse. Listen, we have to start taking personal responsibility for our health. No one was going to come help me or come save me when I was overweight. The only way you’re going to improve your life is if you take action on the information I’m sharing with you.
Here’s what I like to tell people — Raise your hand if you already know something that you should be doing but you’re not doing it and if you did it you would be healthier. And guess what? Everyone’s hand goes up every single time.
So my next question is (and I am usually joking) is — Okay, that’s it, we’re done. That was the whole workshop because if you already have information that you’re not acting on, why would I pour more on you if you’re not going to do anything with it? I get it, that’s life, but the point just simply is this — if you don’t commit to changing your lifestyle, you could wake up tomorrow, next month, next year and you’re going to be worse because your health never stays the same.
You’re either getting better or worse inside your body. When the check engine light goes off in your car, that means something has been going wrong for a while and continues with a slow decline in performance. When you get symptoms of something, it’s gotten to a point where your body says I can’t do this anymore. So just because we’re symptom free doesn’t mean that we’re healthy.
Unfortunately, that’s how most people base their health. Cancer, heart disease and diabetes are the top three killers in America. You don’t feel the symptoms until it’s too late. Before the test comes back, you felt fine and didn’t even know any better. How many people go in for their annual checkup and feel fine, but the test comes back positive of some underlying condition? We can’t base our health on how we feel. We have to base it on the information that we have. When it comes to obesity and being overweight, it has gotten significantly worse.
These maps I’m showing you in the video shows county by county. The darker the red, the more obesity. Then, the darker the colors the more diabetes. The more red again the more heart disease, and finally the more red you can see the higher rates of cancer. The truth is these maps are pretty much the exact same map.
People in the south love fried food, sweet tea and all kinds of comfort food. It’s the lifestyle. These are stereotypes, but on some level they remain true. People in the southern part of America are being lifestyled to death with unhealthy food and lack of exercise which is what’s driving these diseases significantly more in that part of the country. It’s why each map of diseases looks exactly the same.
The obesity epidemic is absolutely out of control. Look at the trend lines. This is not bad luck or bad genes. It’s the food supply. There are preservatives, additives, colorings, pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, and the amount of sugar and calories in our food has gotten significantly greater over the years. That is the primary cause of this trend right here.
