We get a lot of questions about plateaus and they’re supposed to happen. It’s your body protecting you, it’s why you have fat there to begin with because really your body is smarter than you are. So when you hit a plateau here’s what’s happening: the easiest way to think about this is your body is making sure that you know what you’re doing. It’s supposed to happen, it’s gonna happen, and it just wants to know that you’re intentionally losing weight.

Before 100 years ago and the Agricultural Revolution, you would have spent more money buying food than anything else: more than rent, more than your horse, more than anything that’s where your money would have went. And if you didn’t have food that was the number one reason you would die. So, your body has lots of genes to adapt to optimizing weight and healing and storage. It has none to deal with overeating and so for the first time in history we have an overabundance of empty calories – meaning lots of calories and no nutrition – and your body genetically has no idea what to do with that.

So, when you hit a plateau and you’re losing weight remember that fat is there to keep you alive and so your body’s just making sure that you know what you’re doing, you’re not losing it too quickly, and that you’re doing it the right way. The plateau breakers, the three that we have in the book are the best ways we’ve found to let your body know “it’s okay, I know what I’m doing, I still have access to food and fat, I’m choosing to do this and continuing to allow you to lose weight.”
